Preparing for the EPA’s 2026 Refrigerant Transition
As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our members informed and prepared, we want to share an important update from the National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) regarding upcoming changes to HVAC refrigerant regulations. In response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mandate to transition from HFC to A2L refrigerants, NAAEI has released a new HVAC bulletin for all Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians (CAMT) Education Providers, NAAEI Faculty CAMT instructors, and current CAMT students.
What’s Changing?
Effective January 1, 2026, the EPA will require that all newly installed HVAC systems no longer use HFC 410a refrigerant. Instead, systems must transition to A2L refrigerants, which are more environmentally friendly and align with the EPA’s climate goals.
What This Means for You
This transition impacts both property owners and maintenance professionals. The bulletin outlines:
- Key deadlines and compliance requirements
- Training and certification updates
- New labeling and signage protocols
- Guidelines for managing refrigerant leakages
It’s essential that maintenance teams and property managers begin preparing now to ensure a smooth transition and avoid compliance issues.
CAMT Curriculum Updates
To support this transition, the HVAC bulletin will be integrated into the CAMT Air Conditioning Maintenance and Repair module, scheduled for release in September 2025. Starting in June 2025, CAMT students will receive the bulletin as part of their print or digital textbooks. A Spanish-language version will be available in July.In the meantime, all CAMT instructors are encouraged to review the bulletin with their current classes to ensure students are aware of the upcoming changes and understand the steps needed to comply.
